Where the Hell is Matt?

Here’s yet another post with yet another video that anyone who has spent more than 2 minutes on the internet has seen. Except me. Mind you, I saw Matt Harding’s first two dancing videos, but the third one, which came out about half a year ago, had somehow escaped my attention until last week. You can watch it above, but you would be better off going to this link and watching it at the youtube website, where you can select the option of viewing in high definition. There’s something surprisingly joyful and uplifting about Matt’s videos.

You can learn more about Matt at his website. Among other things, you’ll learn that he now lives in Seattle. He made the first of his three videos on his own, but was sponsored by Stride gum for the next two. David Pogue, in his blog last week, had an interesting post about the difficulties Matt had filming one of the scenes in this latest video in HD. (That’s how I realized the third video existed.)

By the way, I can’t resist linking to a blog post from almost three months ago that draws an interesting contrast between Sarah Palin and Matt.

You may recall that in the Katie Couric interview in September, Palin said:

I’m not one of those who maybe came from a background of, you know, kids who perhaps graduate from college. Their parents get them a passport and give them a backpack and say, “go off and travel the world.” No, I’ve worked all my life. In fact I’ve had two jobs all my life until I had kids. I was not a part of, I guess, that culture.

In his blog, Charles Brown takes exception to what he understands her target to be: “Notice that she never came out and says what she really means. Rich people. Snobs. Elitists. You know — the kind of people who get passports. Them.” He describes his own background and his travel history, which you can learn about in his post. And near the end, he adds: “Remember “Wherethehellis” Matt, the guy who had himself filmed dancing all around the world and then put it online? He never went to college. Before he found a corporate sponsor (which occurred only after his first online video was a hit), he paid his own way, doing odd jobs. Is he an elitist?” In conclusion, Brown writes: “But I know I have one quality that Sarah Palin never will: curiosity about what exists beyond my corner of the planet. And I know that when it comes to the rest of the world, Sarah Palin is one thing I’ll never be: a snob.”

Okay, enough on Palin. Enjoy the video. And while you’re at it, watch Matt’s second one:
