Grew up in suburban New York, with interests in math, sports, reading, astronomy, bridge, other stuff. Off to Harvard September 1969, rowed and managed Harvard heavyweight crew, undergraduate degree in mathematics and philosophy 1973, down Mass Ave to MIT, PhD in mathematics in 1977, three years in math department at Brandeis, joined University of Washington faculty in 1980, deferred arrival, spent 1980-1981 at University of Chicago and the University of California, San Diego, came to Seattle in 1981. Mostly here ever since.
Marriage and step-daughter 1985, son 1987, sabbatical at Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton 1987-1988. High-end audio obsession 1992-1993. House renovation obsession 1994-2002. UW math department chair 2001-2002, UW divisional dean of natural sciences 2002-2006, college of arts and sciences interim dean 2006-2008, back in math department 2008-. Started blog September 2008.
